Case Study: Cruise

Case Study: Cruise

A case study on a website based, digital diagnostic tool for car owners to easily learn to maintain their cars and even book a mechanic.

Case Study: for UX Bootcamp

3 Months

Getting Started

To kick off the case study, I dove into empathizing with the user by conducting User Research.

Steps taken: Preliminary Interviews, Competitive Analysis, Creating Personas, and Creating User Empathy Maps.

Flow Chart

I created a simple sitemap that mapped out the main pages that I planned on designing for this web-app.

Wireframing

The sketched & digital wireframes were created using the sitemap structure. I began with a desktop screen size as a majority of my target users would be using a computer when using this product. Once the desktop wireframes were complete, I moved onto tablet and phone screen sizes to ensure this design would be responsive.

Mockups

After creating the wireframes, I conducted a simple usability study with 5 volunteer testers that came from various skill levels, age, genders, and background. From that study, I gathered my insights and narrowed the data into 3 major pain points:

  1. Oversized: Testers felt that all visual elements were too large in size and felt overwhelmed as they could not view all of the available options at one go.

  2. Date Picker: The usability of the date picker was unconventional as it did not follow existing date pickers. This led to some testers feeling confused and frustrated.

  3. Selection: Testers pointed out that not being able to select more than one option was inefficient and cause them to feel annoyed.

Finally, after thoroughly assessing the results from the usability study, it was time to refine the cruise website by adding the new branding and improvements from the usability study. The mockups brought cruise closer to reality.

Final Thoughts

This case study impacted my learning in a major way as I was pushed to learn more about website standards in web design. From text and image sizes, to margins and padding I am grateful for the way I grew in technique.

And most importantly, this case study taught me to always keep the users needs front-and-center.
